BBC Radio 1 BIG Weekend

We are getting ready for an incredible weekend of performances from some of the biggest names in music! Whether you are heading to Stockwood Park to join in the fun, or travelling for other reasons, we want to let you know how your service will be operating – we’ve got the full guide to getting to Radio 1’s Big Weekend by bus and how your service will be affected.

Our guide to travelling to Stockwood Park, Luton on Friday 24th, Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th May

Travel in & around Luton

Our network of services connects most of the town and neighbouring towns to Luton's central Interchange, with a number of service of services to choose from. All services capped at just £2 Adult Single, we have got your travel covered! 

We will be operating normal timetables throughout the weekend, with some services starting/terminating at different points due to the road closures in place. 

Route B will operate normal route from Downside and Dunstable to Luton Interchange. The service operates half hourly until 21:19. 

The bus stops on New Bedford Road (The Galaxy) will not be closed until after 20:00 on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th, and Route E will operate normal route from Chalton, Toddington, Linmere, Houghton Regis and Dunstable to Luton Galaxy Centre. 

Route 230 Luton - Caddington Woods, will be suspended on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th May. 

Route 10 will be unaffected by the closures and passengers from Marsh Farm can travel to Luton Interchange and Silver Street as normal. Passengers travelling to the festival may wish to alight at the Interchange and board Arriva's 321 service to Stockwood Park. 

Route 17 will operate as normal from Lewsey Park, Chaul End and Dallow Road to Galaxy Centre until 8pm. From 8pm, the Galaxy Centre will be closed and the following journeys will operate as followed.

Friday 24th May

  • 19:52 trip from Lewsey Park (arrives at Galaxy Centre for 20:24), will terminate at Luton Interchange. 
  • 20:52 trip from Lewsey Park (arrives at Galaxy Centre for 21:24), will terminate at Luton Interchange. 
  • 19:35 from Luton, Church Street, will operate as normal to Wigmore and Stopley, but instead of terminating at Luton, Church Street for 20:17, it will terminate at Luton Interchange. 
  • 20:35 from Luton, Church Street, will start from Luton Interchange, operate as normal to Wigmore and Stopley, and then terminate at Luton Interchange.  

Saturday 25th May 

  • 19:25 from Galaxy Centre will operate as normal to Wigmore and Stopley, but will terminate at Luton Interchange on its return to the town centre. 
  • 19:53 from Lewsey Park will set down passengers at Luton Interchange instead of Galaxy Centre and Church Street. From there it will operate to Wigmore and Stopsley as normal, then terminate at Luton Interchange from 21:15. 
  • 20:53 trip from Lewsey Park (arrives at Galaxy Centre for 21:15), will terminate at Luton Interchange. 

Route 17A will operate as normal to Round Green, Stopsley, Wigmore and Lewsey Park, except the last journey from the Galaxy Centre, which will depart from Luton Interchange at 20:30 due to New Bedford Road being closed from 8pm. 

 

Arriva's Route 321 will continue to serve Stockwood Park’s main entrance for the duration of the festival. Buses leave from Luton Interchange, Stand 8. They will also be running additional journeys from 11pm until the early hours of the morning to get festival goers home! 

 

Travel to/from Farley Hill

Due to traffic restrictions for the duration of the festival, our 819 service will be affected in the afternoon, and the 46 will be on diversion on 24th and 25th May.

Route 46

  • Journeys from Hemel Hempstead will operate as normal through Slip End to Newlands Road, but instead of turning left onto Newlands Road, it will divert right to A1081 London Road, turn left onto London Road, at the roundabout take 1st exit and stay on London Road, continue on London Road onto Castle Street, at Castle Street roundabout, take 2nd exit onto Castle Street, right Flowers Way, left onto Park St W to Park Square. The last journey from Hemel at 19:50 (due in Luton at 20:35) will be on the same diversion to Castle Street roundabout, but instead of continuing on Castle Street to Flowers Way, it will take 1st exit on A505 and will terminate at Luton Magistrate's Court. 
  • Journeys from Luton will operate the reverse of the above. 

Please note: The Flowers Way stop on Chapel Street will not be served. 

Route 819 

  • The morning journey will operate as normal to Queen Elizabeth School. 
  • The afternoon journey will operate as normal from Queen Elizabeth School to Crawley Green Road, Crescent Rise, and Church Street, but instead of continuing on Church Street and Park Street, it will divert right onto Station Road to Interchange, continue on Mill Street, left onto Telford Way, right onto Hatters Way, continue on Hatters Wat to the roundabout with Dallow Road., take 1st exit onto Dallow Road, continue on Dallow Road, right onto Brantwood Road, right onto Ashburnham Road onto Long Crfot Road, left on Priestleys, left onto Whipperley Ring onto Whipperley Way, left onto Borthdrift Way, right Wilsden Avenue, left Bolingbrooke Road, right Meyrick Avenue, continue onto Russell Street, and left onto Salisbury Road, where the 819 will terminate. 

Please note: Students who would normally alight on Farley Hill or Castle Street, should alight the bus at the Windsor Road stop on Russell Street. 

 

From Stevenage

Our 44 service departs from Stevenage's central Bus Station, although not a frequent service, it will depart the Bus Station at 10:00, 12:00, 14:30, and 17:00 (Friday & Saturday). The journey takes roughly 50 minutes to Luton Interchange.

From Hemel Hempstead 

Our 46 service departs from Bridge Street & Queensway in Hemel Hempstead, to Luton, Park Square. It operates an hourly service from Hemel, and the journey takes roughly 55 minutes to Luton.
