Changes to buses in East Leicestershire and Rutland from 13th August 2017

Rising costs, reducing customer numbers and worsening congestion have led to action needing to be taken to ensure that our business remains on a firm footing for the future.

Centrebus has worked closely with both Leicestershire County Council and Rutland County Council who are the local transport co-ordinators in their respective areas and have the ability to support local bus services that cannot be sustained on a commercial basis.

Following a lengthy review of its operations in the Melton area a difficult decision has been made by the board to close the Saxby depot and move the majority of the existing services to operate out of our Grantham depot whilst at the same time setting up a new smaller site in Coston for the more local services.

Matt Evans, Managing Director at Centrebus: “Rising costs, reducing passenger numbers and worsening traffic congestion have led us to make this difficult decision in an attempt to streamline the business and as a result close our depot at Saxby in Leicestershire. Discussions with our affected employees and other stakeholders are ongoing”.

Here are the details of the changes to the following local bus services from 13 August 2017:

Service 8: Loughborough – Melton – Grantham

The section of route between Loughborough and Melton Mowbray will reduce to 5 journeys a day which are financially supported by Leicestershire County Council. The section between Melton Mowbray and Grantham will remain commercially operated with a slightly improved timetable including earlier buses from Grantham and later buses to Grantham.

Service 19: Nottingham – Melton Mowbray – Oakham – Stamford - Peterborough

The Nottingham to Melton Mowbray service will be reduced to 2-hourly with most journeys operating through from Melton to Grantham as service 8 offering new journey opportunities along these routes.

Between Melton Mowbray and Oakham the 19 will be replaced by the extension of service RF1 providing through links from Corby and Uppingham to Melton Mowbray. There will be changes to the times of journeys from that currently provided but will offer a similar level of service to current provision.

Between Stamford and Peterborough the service will continue to operate hourly between Stamford Bus Station and Peterborough, with a slightly revised timetable but offering a similar level of service to that currently provided.

In partnership with Rutland County Council, the section of route from Oakham to Stamford will operate to revised timetable. The service will operate hourly and most journeys will operate through to Peterborough.

Separately from this Broadmarsh Bus Station in Nottingham will be closing on 9th July 2017 for 2 years for redevelopment.  During this period the 19 will operate from Collin Street (in front of the shopping centre).

Service 29

The service will be re-routed between Oakham & Melton via the 19 route through Ashwell replacing a journey on the 19. To provide extra capacity the service will be upgraded to a large double decker vehicle.  To accommodate this there will be a revision to the timetable with the service starting slightly earlier. The revised timetable will come into effect from the 27th August 2017.

Service 146 Oakham Hopper

This service will operate to a revised timetable from the 27th August 2017.

I'd like to make a comment about the upcoming service changes

Please use the contact form or email and we'll look into your concerns for you.

What will happen to the drivers on my service?

We've consulted closely with the drivers and their union (UNITE) throughout the service changes. Most drivers will remain at our new Coston site, with drivers based close to our Grantham and Corby depots transferring across accordingly.

Can I still use my bus pass on the new services?

Yes, all tickets and ENCTS passes will be valid on the new services.

Will the buses continue to show "five counties" branding on the 19 and 9?

No, these services will be operated by our plain liveried buses and the five counties branding will be withdrawn.
